Following a meeting of UNISON’s Scottish Local Government Committee today, the committee has taken the decision to suspend strike action planned for 21 October and consult our members on new proposals put forward by the Scottish Employers (CoSLA).

July 8th, 2014The Consultative Ballot on Pay closed today with members voting by 65% to 35% in favour of moving to a formal industrial action ballot in support of an improved offer.
At todays Scottish Local Government Committee it was agreed to now progress with the preparatory work for an industrial action ballot and to have discussions through a meeting of all Branch Secretaries as to the campaign and strategy required to maximise participation and win the ballot.

June 17th, 2014Since the last executive meeting we have dealt with over 1000 items of email correspondence and also around a dozen general telephone enquiries each day from members, we had no telephones for a period of almost 12 days due to a fault with the Council’s VOIP system; Issues included Redundancy consultations, Ongoing Employment Tribunal requests to Scottish Region, Fair Treatment at Work issues, Health & Safety concerns, Personal Injury claims, Discrimination cases and sickness absence meetings.

The Yes Group is holding a meeting at Annan Academy on 29 May at 7.30pm and have invited UNISON members to attend. Speakers will include Jim Sillars – SNP, Ash Regan-Denham – Women for Independence, Richard Arklass – Business for Scotland and Mark Frankland – a local campaigner.

UNISON balloted it’s member’s about the 1% pay offer for 2013/14. The ballot result narrowly agreed to accept the offer, however the employers group COSLA decided that they were extending the offer to cover a two year period including 2014/15 – this happened out-with any bargaining discussions.

Non-members usually say that the unions do nothing for them and are often the first to criticise us – until they need us.
